On curiosity, discernment, and having the courage to examine what we have been taught.
From the moment we begin learning, we are surrounded by ideas about how the world works, who we are, what we should believe, and how we should live. Some of these ideas may serve us well. Others may have been inherited without ever being examined.
There is nothing wrong with learning from others. In fact, much of human progress depends upon the knowledge passed from one generation to another. But learning becomes something deeper when we develop the courage to question, investigate, and understand for ourselves.
Noble Drew Ali expressed a powerful principle when he taught that each individual possesses the capacity for development and that it ultimately rests with the individual to “make or mar his fortune.”
There is considerable responsibility contained within those words. They suggest that we are not merely passive recipients of life. We have the capacity to develop ourselves, to learn, to change, and to make conscious choices about the direction we take.
Questioning is therefore not necessarily an act of rebellion. It can be an act of respect for truth.
To question something does not mean automatically rejecting it. It means being willing to look more closely. Where did this idea come from? What evidence supports it? Does it remain relevant? Have I understood it correctly? What happens when I examine it from another perspective?
A mature mind can hold a question without immediately demanding an answer. Sometimes the willingness to remain curious is more valuable than rushing towards certainty.
There is also humility in questioning ourselves. We may discover that some of the beliefs we defend most strongly were never truly examined. We may find that our opinions were shaped by fear, habit, culture, upbringing, or the influence of others. Recognising this does not make us weak. It gives us an opportunity to become more conscious.
The courage to question should therefore be accompanied by the courage to listen. If we only question what disagrees with us while accepting everything that confirms our existing beliefs, we are not truly seeking understanding. We are simply protecting our conclusions.
Wisdom requires something more difficult: the willingness to follow truth wherever honest inquiry leads.
A society that encourages thoughtful questioning creates individuals capable of learning and adapting. A society that discourages questions risks creating generations that know how to repeat, but not how to understand.
Your life is too important to be lived entirely through assumptions borrowed from others.
Ask questions. Study deeply. Listen carefully. Examine your beliefs. Remain open to learning.
And when you discover that something you once believed requires changing, have the courage to change it.
A Principle to Consider
Questioning is not the opposite of knowledge. Done with sincerity and discernment, it is one of the pathways through which genuine understanding develops.
